SMALLWORLDS FOREVER

SmallWorlds.com was an immersive online virtual world and social network created by Outsmart Games, a game development studio based in Auckland, New Zealand. The studio was known for building creative browser based games and mobile titles that reached millions of players worldwide. SmallWorlds combined exploration, customization, and social connection, allowing players to design spaces, collect rare items, create art, and participate in story driven missions that encouraged imagination and collaboration. The platform also integrated with YouTube, Flickr, and SoundCloud, blending user generated media with an interactive virtual experience. After a decade of operation, the game’s servers were closed in 2018 following the end of Adobe Flash support and a decline in advertising revenue, which made the platform unsustainable after years of community growth and innovation. After the closure, former product manager Vince and developer Matt created TownCenter, an independent successor project that sought to reimagine SmallWorlds with modern web technology. Their work reflected genuine dedication to the original community, capturing its creative spirit while introducing new technical foundations. Although the project was eventually discontinued due to financial and technical challenges, it remains a respected chapter in the game’s history and a testament to the passion of its players and developers.

SmallWorlds Forever is a community led open source project focused on preserving and studying the original SmallWorlds platform. Its purpose is to document the game’s underlying systems, share technical insight, and provide an educational foundation for anyone interested in how virtual worlds were built and maintained. Some parts of the code may reflect or replicate elements from the original game for reference and learning purposes, but no official assets such as artwork, music, or other proprietary materials are included or distributed. This project exists to keep the history of SmallWorlds accessible, encourage learning, and support creative experimentation built on the ideas that made the original world unique.
